  11.  INSTALLATION
  12.  ~~~~~~~~~~~~
  13.  TERMINATOR 2 is a brand new program - so you MUST start afresh with
  14.  a new directory structure separate, distinct and apart from any old
  15.  directory structure in which obsolete versions or files of this (or,
  16.  of course, other programs) may already exist.
  17.  
  18.  TERMINATOR 2 is my trademark. It's important that you always write
  19.  it in capitals and always with an arabic (as opposed to Roman)
  20.  numeral `2'. I would prefer it if you use the full TERMINATOR 2 name
  21.  the first time you write it and then, subsequently, it may be
  22.  abbreviated to `T2'
  23.  
  24.  The various different letter versions of TERMINATOR 2 - this one is
  25.  `a' - may contain very significant new features and bug fixes so that
  26.  is why I have changed the distribution archive naming scheme:
  27.  
  28.  I would very much prefer it if you distribute my original PKware ZIP
  29.  TERMINATOR 2 archives intact and with exactly the same 0204T2A?.ZIP
  30.  names since my authenticity verification (# JRU603 -AV) will then be
  31.  preserved.

  33.  If you *must* re-archive my distribution archives then please, please
  34.  DO keep the generic file naming scheme of 0204T2An.*  (where n is the
  35.  archive part number and * stands for an appropriate archive extension
  36.  eg: ZIP, RAR, LHA, ARJ, ARC, ZOO, SQZ, etc)!!!

  42. At the Operating System prompt, enter: INSTALL
  43.  
  44. (TERMINATOR 2 is WARP aware and should automatically detect the OS/2
  45. environment if you have OS2COMSPEC set and act accordingly)

  53. After a successful installation, enter:         T.BAT
  54. and the first time the program runs it will attempt an intelligent
  55. configuration.
  56.  
  57. For people who don't know much about serial communication and modems:
  58. - don't worry about all the options!
  59.  
  60. IMPORTANT: If you don't understand a toggle or option do not change it
  61.            - just leave it as it is. The options have already been set
  62.            to give the best performance for the majority.
  63.

  66. All options have been set as sensible defaults for normal use, and
  67. there is no immediate need to change much - although you may need to
  68. set up the following things if the intelligent configuration failed
  69. or you aborted it:
  70.  
  71. Port Parameters:-
  72. To change these, press [Alt] and [P] simultaneously from the Terminal
  73. window.
  74. After you have made your changes, hit "OK" for a temporary change for
  75. that session only, or "Update" to permanently write the changes in
  76. your configuration.
  77.  
  78. If you have a faster modem than 2400 bps, you should set your bps rate
  79. to 19200 or 38400 or even faster (see below).
  80.  
  81. Fast modems can use data compression and if you only use 9600, you
  82. will not be making the best of the hardware you possess for fast
  83. transfers since your low port speed will act as a bottleneck.
  84.  
  85. Normally, for most BBS use, you use 8 databits, no parity, 1 stopbit.
  86.  
  87. If you DO have a slow modem and are using 2400 or slower, you should
  88. disable Hardware RTS/CTS flowcontrol in the "Change Configuration,
  89. Communication Setup" menu.
  90.  
  91. 9600bps and faster modems use Hardware RTS/CTS flowcontrol, which is a
  92. safer way of sending data when using a comport at 19200 or above.
  93. (Don't ever run 57600 bps or faster on external modems, unless you are
  94. sure that your cable is protected from noise - try 38400 first.)
  95.  
  96. Remember you must also set RTS/CTS flowcontrol in your modem - look in
  97. the modem manual. RTS/CTS flowcontrol requires an internal modem OR an
  98. external modem AND a proper modem cable which has the RTS and CTS
  99. (Request to send/Clear to send) pins connected.
  100.  
  101. "Dialling and modem" configuration menu:-
  102. If you did not allow the program to install a modem from the pick
  103. list at first installation, you might choose "Install modem" from
  104. this menu now.
  105.  
  106. If your modem does not feature in the pick list of modems, you must
  107. set the following things manually - or at least check if they work
  108. (Look in your modem manual to check for further details. Remember
  109. factory defaults on your modem may mean you won't have to change
  110. anything...):

  112. Carrier Detect (CD) follows line (usually &C1)
  113.  
  114. Type AT&C1 and press enter
  115.  
  116. When DTR is low, line must be dropped, (Usually &D2 or &D3)
  117.  
  118. Type AT&D2 and press enter
  119.  
  120. Not all modems like this, if you can't hangup your modem, move to the
  121. "Modem & dialling" menu and Enter a 0 at the hang-up options which
  122. will allow TERMINATOR 2 to send a hangup string to your modem instead.
  123.  
  124. Type ATS0=0
  125. Then your modem will not pick up the phone - leaving TERMINATOR 2 to
  126. make the decision.

  128. If you can save your setup in your modem, type AT&W, otherwise you
  129. must use the initstring which combines these various commands:
  130. AT&C1&D2S0=0^M
  131.  
  132. If your modem string is not sent because the carrier is high when you
  133. start up TERMINATOR 2, you should use the switch "Force init string"
  134. in the "Dialling and modem" menu..
  135.  
  136. If your modem is a normal Hayes compatible you don't need to set up
  137. anything else, everything has been set up already.

  141. Now you should be ready to press [Alt][D] for the phonebook and call
  142. some of the great BBS's listed there - or make some entries of your
  143. own...
